Surrender...
Surrender...
— It’s not the natural way of mankind
— a definition: “to yield to the power, control, or possession of another upon compulsion or demand.”
— Our usual nature is to roll around in the mud and fight
— We will fight to the ends of the earth…
— holding on to our own power
— never giving up control or possession
— never yielding to another by compulsion or by a demand.
— Yet… Christ, the Apostles and ALL of scripture asks us to do exactly that… To surrender
“Rooted” - Review
“Rooted” - Review
— Over the last 12 weeks or so we have looked at scripture and considered the idea of being “rooted” in the foundations of Christ.
— Our scriptural reference that we have went back to many times over the last several weeks is found in
Colossians 2:6–7 (ESV)
6 Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
“Therefore as you received Christ Jesus the Lord...”
“so walk IN him...”
“rooted and built up in him...”
“established in the faith...”
“Just as you were taught...”
---------------
“Therefore as you received Christ Jesus the Lord...” this is a continuing action. Keep receiving Him into your life daily
“...so walk IN him...” Walking in Him requires SURRENDER to self, to the teachings of the world, and surrender to
every will and way in our world. To walk in him requires surrender to everything except Christ.
“...rooted and built up in him...” Christ is your starting, continuing and ending point. The foundation of faith is found only in a relationship with God through Christ.
— When you are built up in him… you certainly have a firm foundation.
“…established in the faith...” Our marching orders are found in the building blocks of scripture (the 10 Commandments, the Old Testament, the prophets and history, the advent of Jesus, His death, burial and resurrection.
— The coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the New Testament, the church and our responsibility to preach and reach world with the Gospel. These are our foundations
“… Just as you were taught...” There is an assumption there that you were taught (Someone had to step it up and be willing to teach you.) (Whether as a child, young or old adult)
— We ALL need to be taught… there is always something to learn or to be clarified
“… abounding in Thanksgiving.” There is some clarification needed here. We should be shouting from the mountain tops…
— THANK YOU GOD,
— THANK YOU JESUS,
— THANK YOU FOR SALVATION,
— THANK YOU FOR CONFIRMATION IN MY LIFE,
— THANK YOU FOR A FUTURE THAT IS FOUND IN CHRIST ALONE
Surrendering to Christ requires all of your strength, your resistance and passion.
— As we have learned Christ’s strength is found in our weakness.
— As Paul said, “When I am weak, I am strong.
— So in our weakest most vulnerable position is where we find Christ. Where He is the strongest!!
— We are to resist evil in all forms
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
— The Lord tells us to put on the armor,
— He tells us he is our shield and provides a way to resist the devil.
— In return He wants worship, service and honor. He is demanding our surrender!!
Surrendering to Christ's Will
Surrendering to Christ's Will
— Surrendering to the Will of Christ is an act of submission
— It’s not natural… at least for most of us.
— In a world that often encourages self-reliance and independence, the Bible teaches us the profound truth that true freedom is found in surrendering to the will of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
POINT #1 - Recognizing the need for Surrender
— Why do we need to surrender at all?
— The fact of the matter is that we, left to ourselves find NO NEED to surrender.
— We are self made people who have no need to turn any control of our hearts, minds and ourselves over to another.
— Except for Word of God
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
— Trust, trust, trust
— Trust the Lord, Do not lean into your self but lean into the Lord… Surrender to him.
— The results will be incredible… He will make straight your paths.
The journey of SURRENDER begins with trusting, acknowledging, self-denial and taking up our cross.
— The Bible calls us to trust in the Lord completely, acknowledging that His understanding surpasses our own.
— Jesus Himself emphasized the importance of self-denial and taking up our cross.
“Self-denial” signifies a surrendering of our desires and plans.
— What plans, dreams have you had that have been re-directed by Christ?
— Have you willing re-directed or have you fought it all along the way?
— What are some of the results..?
We see it all around us… the rain falls on the just and unjust.
— We as followers of Christ don’t see the many rewards that we received by following
— Instead we see what the guy up the street has in his garage or in his driveway
— But what awaits us… Those who are using all of our strength to draw closely to Christ, surrendering to Him and His ways?
— I’d love to tell you that’s it’s a bowl of beautiful fresh picked fruit, no seeds, no pits, no dark spots, no rotten spots… That’s not reality!
— In fact we see the fallen part of our world “winning.”
— And we see ourselves falling behind in the matters of world. So...
— We begin to play the “mug-womp” game
— We play the many sides of any issue wanting to get the best result for ourselves
— Our “mug” is the right space… but our “womp”draws us away from surrender and towards,
— “I’m going to do it my way...”
POINT #2 - What is the solution to “Our own way?” Surrendering in Obedience!
— Surrendering to Christ's will involves obediently offering ourselves as living sacrifices.
— This means resisting conformity to the world and allowing the Word of God to renew our minds.
— Our scripture for the rest of today is found in the book of Romans, Chapter 12.
— This found on page 947 in the bibles in front of you, or in your own bible or app.
1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
— The power of these verses is in our surrender… to give up our bodies as a living sacrifice for spiritual worship.
— To give up our very essence, our very bodies as a living sacrifice is the ultimate surrender to Christ
2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
— The verse starts with a warning… DO NOT BE CONFORMED TO THIS WORLD.
— Be transformed by the renewal that happens in a relationship with Christ
— your renewed mind may discern what is the will of God, what is good, acceptable and perfect.
— Your renewal, your transformation, your discernment of the will of God is found in our surrender to Him
3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
— Your surrender is found in the humble view of yourself.
— With sober judgement… with discernment, with great faith
— We boldly venture out into our world… a world that is NOT friendly to us and in many ways moves against us in opposition to God.
— Use the gifts that have been given us to encourage others and ourselves to surrender to Christ.
Point #3 - Trust in the Sovereignty of God
— Trusting in Christ can be difficult
— Even if we understand that he created by his power every thing seen and unseen
— Even if we know that the world was created by God for us.
— Even if we understand “God’s Sovereignty”
— We still have doubts and fears
— We hold on to the idea that God is in charge… even if we don’t know what he is up to
— Trusting in God's sovereignty is a crucial aspect of surrender.
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
— God reminds us that God's thoughts and ways are higher than ours, emphasizing the need for trust in His wisdom.
Ultimately our surrender to Christ is our benefit
— Christ understands position, understands our problems and will willingly provide guidance and direction… in our surrender to him.
